Mrs Murry’s conversation with Meg also provides some of an explanation for the three Mrs. When they are discussing Charles Wallace’s and the idea that he is not like anyone else- that he is ‘new’, Mrs Murry says,”...but people are more than just the way they look. Charles Wallace’s difference isn’t physical. It’s an essence.” It’s not really until I re-read this chapter that I made this connection but I think that it’s important as it also helps us to understand the three Mrs because they are not really physical in the way the humans are but they are an essence of different beings.
I think this chapter should be called Yin and Yang. It is quite clear that Meg and Calvin are two pieces to a puzzle, like the Chinese idea that opposites can actually work together to be stronger than the individual parts. Calvin is so certain that everything is going to be wonderful and Meg expects the worst. Calvin is clever with words, Meg is best at Maths. They are like two perfect opposing pieces. Often, in books, two opposing forces provide balance to the story. I’m wondering if this is the case here, if Meg and Calvin have to use their strengths separately but also have to use their strengths AND weaknesses together to overcome something terrible.

I agree with that they are complete opposites but together they support each other in good and bad situations. They both provide good ideas but with there differences they can work together to be an unbeatable force through the journey with a lot of ups and downs.

I agree with Mrs Cosentino that Meg and Calvin are like yin and yan and must use it to defeat the man with red eyes.

Charles Wallace has been gifted. It was like this mission was calling his name. He was born to do the journey. He was born to defeat the black thing and keep meg support. Then Calvin came so you knew something was going to happen to Charles since he was always there to support meg but then the man with ted eyes came and took over charles and that was when Calvins powers came stronger and he had to take the role of charles supporting meg every step of the way wait wasn’t that Charles job?

I love your thinking Annalise! Calvin definitely takes over Charles Wallace’ role as Meg’s greatest support. I love how they become so close so quickly - it is so natural for them. He doesn’t feel rejected by her when she tries to pull away or hide her feelings from him, instead he is persistent and just stays with her. Everyone needs a friend like Calvin!
