This year's them is "Connect to Reading" and I always like to try to incorporate the theme into the learning experiences I create with these books. In our Library I've broken the overall theme down into "Connect to Somethings" so Kindergarten are working through a "Connect to Authors" Unit including Mem Fox, Nick Bland and Jan Ormerod and Andrew Joyner. Stage Two are doing "Connect to Illustrators" and Stage Three are expanding on the "Connect to (Graphic Novels) Classics" Unit started in Term 2 by examining characterisation, plot and setting using Andrew Cranna's, "The Great Blood Bank Robbery".
In Australia Book Week 2014 runs from Saturday 16 August to Friday 22 August. For me, this is the busiest but best time of the year in the Library because I really get to showcase the Children's Book Council Awards Short-listed books to encourage a love of reading for life. Most exciting for me this upcoming term is Stage One's "Connect to Others" Unit which will see our four Stage One classes using edmodo to collaborate on a Book Rap on Bob Graham's shortlisted picture book, "The Silver Button". Year One classes from Waverley and a Year Two class from Mortdale will complete the same literature-based activities and write and respond to their peer's comments and work via a secure, private edmodo group. This is the first time our students have used edmodo to collaborate with peers from other schools so it is going to be a learning experience for all of us and will hopefully open up new opportunities for future collaborative projects as well.
