Focus Question: How can students help school workers do their job?
During Term 4, 2013 students in 1C, 1R, 1/2Z, 2B and 2/3A will explore the Workers in our School Community. They will:
- Classify workers in the local community using a jointly constructed retrieval chart
- Narrow workers to one specific location - school
- Used bubbl.us to create a mind map of possible questions to ask
- Create a survey on SurveyMonkey (Years 2 and 3) or email questions to a specific school worker
- Use the responses to their survey or email to discuss and identify options for promoting how students can assist workers in the school community
- Synthesise their learning to create a Zimmertwins movie or a Microsoft Powerpoint poster.
Library activities Weeks 6-8
- Finalise collection, analysis and presentation of data. Complete a Zimmertwins movie using three characters to clearly show how students can assist workers in the school community (that is, listen to instructions, be kind to others, and so on, depending on the workers' replies).
- All movies and posters should be finished by the end of Week 8. Completed Zimmertwins can be found on this blog.
Weeks 8 to 10
Lego Exploration
Focus Questions: You have been asked to expand the Lego range by creating a new Theme set. What would be suitable? Why? What would the Lego character/s look like? What else would be needed to complete the set?
- Students explore Lego theme sets and answer a variety of research questions to develop background knowledge about the product.
- They describe and design a new Lego set of their choosing. It must not duplicate any existing sets. Remember that it will be most-cost effective if they only use existing brick shapes and structures.
