Chapter 2 introduced a couple of new characters as well - Calvin O'Keefe and Mrs Who. Calvin is somewhat of a misfit in his family as well. He is scientifically clever and we learn that he is like Charles Wallace - he can feel things and hear things, "Sometimes I get a feeling about things. You might call it a compulsion."..."When I get this feeling, this compulsion, I always do what it tells me. I can't explain where it comes from or how I get it, and it doesn't happen very often. But I obey it. And this afternoon I had this feeling that I must come over to the haunted house...". Charles Wallace confirms that he and Calvin are the same, "Mother's all right. She's not one of us. But she's all right" but also confuses Meg at the same time by saying that Meg has it tough because "She's not really one thing or the other." We're beginning to get this sense of uniqueness about the children and the purpose of them being at the haunted house with the three Mrs.
There is clearly magic or some other form of witchcraft going on at the haunted house when the children observe that there is a fire under the pot but no smoke coming out of the chimney. Like the children we expect to meet Mrs Whatsit again but are introduced to Mrs Who instead. Mrs Who speaks in English, as well as many other languages, and often recites sayings or poetry in those languages to make her point. She confirms that Calvin has come to the haunted house with a purpose, and it is implied that it was Mrs Whatsit who magically called him to the haunted house. Mrs Who also hints at an upcoming journey for all of them and insists that the children go home and get a good rest and feed before they are called for this mysterious adventure.
Many questions are still unanswered at the end of this Chapter:
What does Mrs Who mean when she says "it's getting near time?" and how or what does she know about Mr Murry?
Who's idea was it to get Calvin involved and why? What does he add to the story?
What does Calvin mean when he says, "I've never even seen your house, and I have the funniest feeling that for the first time in my life I'm going home."?
