The Teacher Librarian JourneyYesterday I was different, and life was different for our students. The challenge of not only teacher librarianship and information science, but life today, in general is to evolve and change. We are now teaching students who will be graduating into a world that is vastly different from that of their parents. Sadly, over half of young Australian students studying today are working towards careers in jobs that will be radically affected by automation in the next 10-15 years (Foundation for Young Australians, 2015). The skills required for young people to survive in the future will focus on flexibility, transferability and collaboration. The path that has led me from Corporate Communications to Classroom Teaching to Teacher Librarianship, is, in itself, an example of the flexibility and adaptability that our students will require for their future success.
As the first step on my journey of empowering young people to meet these challenges is coming to end, it is important to look back on those aspects of the Masters of Education (Teacher Librarianship) that have had significant impacts on the way that I view the profession, my responsibility to my students and the wider school community and the ways in which I am becoming an effective information services leader and Teacher Librarian.
